| The German submarine U35 operated in the Mediterranean Sea throughout World War I. The most successful "U-boat" of the war, U35 sank an amazing 224 ships during the conflict. U35 was commanded by the legendary Captain Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière, the captain famous for his adherence to prize rules: allowing the crews of merchant ships about to be sunk to board lifeboats. He even provided directions to the nearest port before sinking their ships. Even today, nearly 100 years later, Von Arnauld de la Perière remains the most successful submarine commander in history. |
